Homa Bay Violence: Civilians Flee to Church as Clashes Leave 2 Dead and 46 Injured

Violence surrounding a Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay on Sunday spilled into the grounds of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s Lake Victoria Field headquarters, where civilians seeking refuge were caught up in further clashes.

Witnesses said frightened civilians, caught between supporters of Governor James Orengo and armed youths, ran towards the SDA compound for safety. Evangelist Dan Okumu said a guard opened the gates to let them in, but the move was followed by further violence.

A driver trying to enter the compound was attacked, and his vehicle was later set on fire. Church reading materials were reportedly used as fuel. Pastor Samson Okwach, president of the Lake Victoria Field, condemned the attack, saying the church had been turned into a site of violence. Several staff members were injured.

The violence also spread across Homa Bay Town. At least two people were killed, including a police officer who was struck by a rock while transporting colleagues. Six vehicles were set on fire along the Homa Bay-Rongo road, including one belonging to Media Max Network Limited.

On Monday morning, motorists and boda boda riders found roads covered with shattered glass and the remains of burnt vehicles. Residents said the unrest could discourage investment and worsen economic hardship in a town where many people depend on daily earnings.

“A single day of paralysis affects thousands of people,” said local trader Justo Odero.

Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital was also targeted. Attackers reportedly went to the facility in search of injured rally participants. Hospital chief executive Vincent Oduor said 46 patients were treated, many for machete and knife wounds, while seven remained in critical condition. One woman died after being injured by a speeding vehicle.

Journalists covering the clashes were also attacked. AFP reporters Fred Ooko and Brian Ongoro were assaulted and robbed of their equipment while reporting on the violence.

A beach hotel in Homa Bay Town was also targeted after armed youths entered the establishment and forced guests out while looking for supporters of Linda Mwananchi. The incident followed remarks by local politicians calling on supporters to prevent opposition leaders from entering the county.

The violence has prompted calls for mediation, with some residents urging Ida Odinga to intervene and help ease tensions between Linda Mwananchi supporters and allies of President William Ruto.

The clashes have raised concerns about the safety of churches, hospitals, media workers and businesses during periods of political tension. Pastor Okwach warned that the events could be an indication of the risks Kenya may face as the country approaches the 2027 election season if political tensions are not addressed.
