Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has left President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and declared his allegiance to the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), placing himself in the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro made the announcement at a press briefing at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on 17 August, ending his association with the ruling party after months of reflection and consultations with political leaders across the divide. He said he had held discussions with several senior politicians, including Martha Karua, Peter Munya, James Orengo, Edwin Sifuna, Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

He said his discussions with Matiang’i had continued for about a year. Nyoro described his decision as a personal and political reassessment of how best to serve Kenyans. He said his concerns about the Kenya Kwanza administration had grown during what he described as a period of “trial and error” in government.

He said the experience had shown him the difference between campaigning and governing, noting that “it is easier to campaign than to govern”. According to Nyoro, unfulfilled campaign promises had contributed to declining public trust in the administration.

The former chair of the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee also outlined what he believes the opposition needs to do to offer a credible alternative to the government. He said opposition leaders should focus on governance and delivery and be clear about what they would achieve if elected.

Nyoro said he would also mentor candidates seeking ward and parliamentary seats under the PPK banner as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s grassroots organisation. His immediate plans include a nationwide tour, starting with Uasin Gishu, Kericho and Nandi, areas that have traditionally supported President Ruto.

He said the visits would give him an opportunity to explain his decision to leave the ruling coalition and mobilise support for the opposition. He also invited members of allied opposition parties to join PPK rallies, presenting the party as a platform for bringing together different opposition groups.

Nyoro’s departure adds to a series of high-profile exits from UDA as political parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 election. 2027 election.
