Huduma Kenya Explains When You Can Change Your Child’s Name on Birth Certificate

Huduma Kenya has clarified that a child’s name can only be removed or changed on a birth certificate within two years of registration.

The agency said name changes within this period are allowed where an error was made during the initial registration. The guidance follows rules issued by the State Department for Immigration and Citizenship Services, which sets the two-year limit for such amendments.

Civil Registration Services processes applications through Huduma Centres and the eCitizen platform. Parents must provide supporting documents and pay a fee of Ksh1,000. The process is simpler when the child is below two years old.

After the two-year period, changing a child’s name requires a legal Deed Poll prepared through an advocate. Both guardians must consent to the change unless one is deceased or a court order provides an exemption. The new name must also be published in the Kenya Gazette.

Huduma Kenya has also clarified that parental details cannot be removed from a birth certificate. Unlike a child’s name, parental particulars are treated as permanent entries in the civil register.

The two-year period gives parents an opportunity to correct clerical errors or wrongly recorded names before the information becomes more difficult to amend. Parents are therefore required to check birth certificates promptly after they are issued and seek corrections within the permitted period.

Once the child is over two years old, the available legal process is more extensive and requires additional documentation and formal procedures.
