Standard Editor Alex Kiprotich Records Statement Over Alleged Abduction

Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich has recorded a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over his alleged abduction on the Nakuru–Gilgil highway.

Mr Kiprotich appeared at the DCI South Rift offices in Nakuru on Friday accompanied by Standard Group lawyer Gordon Ogolla and senior colleagues. The team also included staff members Julius Chepkwony and Geoffrey Kamau, as well as Chief Head of Security Tom Kipyegon.

Mr Kiprotich and his colleagues submitted the vehicle he was driving when the incident occurred for forensic examination. DCI officers from the Forensic Crime Scene unit dusted the vehicle and collected fingerprints as part of the investigation.

Mr Kipyegon said the forensic examination could provide important evidence to help identify those involved in the incident. Standard Group lawyer Mr Ogolla said the company would file a constitutional petition on Monday seeking protection for its employees. 

He said the company regarded the abduction as an act of harassment and intimidation by state actors. Mr Ogolla also questioned the police response, saying officers did not act promptly after the incident. He said the company had lost confidence in the police investigating the case because officers were present at the Gilgil weighbridge, where the abduction allegedly took place.

“We will be seeking conservatory orders to prevent a repeat of the incident,” Mr Ogolla said.

Mr Kipyegon also questioned why another vehicle allegedly connected to the incident had not been submitted for forensic examination. He said ownership of the vehicle was reportedly transferred within three hours of the alleged abduction, raising questions that investigators would need to address.

“Now it is up to them to tell us and to unmask the faces, to confirm to the nation who really abducted Alex,” Mr Kipyegon said.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has also taken an interest in the case. Its officials have visited Standard Group offices and engaged with DCI investigators.

Mr Ogolla and Mr Kipyegon called on IPOA to take over the investigation, arguing that an independent inquiry would provide greater confidence in the findings.

Mr Kiprotich was allegedly abducted shortly before 9.20pm while travelling towards Nakuru. He was later found near Masinga Dam, hours after he was taken.
