Kisii Village Stunned as Image Resembling 'Virgin Mary' Appears on Kitchen Wall

An image resembling the Virgin Mary has appeared on the wall of a kitchen in Getare Village, Bobasi Constituency, Kisii County, attracting residents and visitors who have gathered to pray and view it.

The image was first noticed last Friday at the home of Mary Onsombi. It is a whitish-grey outline measuring about 18 inches in height on the northern wall of the mud-walled kitchen, near the three-stone fireplace where Ms Onsombi cooks.

Some visitors say the image resembles the Virgin Mary, depicted with a veil and her hands clasped in prayer. Others believe it is a stain caused by years of smoke and dampness.

Ms Onsombi reportedly initially tried to wipe away what she believed was a patch of smoke. Instead, the outline appeared to become more distinct, prompting neighbours to take notice and word to spread around the village. By Sunday, villagers, schoolchildren, boda boda riders and preachers from different denominations were visiting the homestead. Some arrived carrying rosaries, while others used their phones to photograph and record the image.

Catholic nuns were also seen at the homestead praying and taking notes. Masige East MCA Michael Motume was among local leaders who visited the site.

“Whether this is a miracle or not, I have no authority to authenticate,” Mr Motume said.

The Catholic Church in Kisii has not issued a formal statement on the image. The Church traditionally approaches reports of Marian apparitions cautiously and subjects claims to investigation before determining whether they have any religious significance.

A catechist, who spoke anonymously, said similar reports in Kenya had in some cases later been attributed to natural causes. However, the catechist said the faith expressed by those who visited the site should not simply be dismissed.

The growing number of visitors has also raised concerns about public safety. The small kitchen, which has effectively become a prayer site, is not designed to accommodate large crowds.

Local administrators are concerned about the possibility of overcrowding, stampedes and the spread of disease as visitors gather at the homestead. Police in Bobasi have been placed on alert as authorities monitor the situation.

The increased activity has also created an opportunity for local boda boda operators. Some are charging Sh100 to transport visitors from Emenwa Centre to the Onsombi homestead. For the Onsombi family, the incident has brought an unexpected stream of visitors to their previously quiet rural home.
