DCI Sounds Alarm Over TikTok Network Luring Kenyans Into Crime

Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned the public about a criminal network accused of using TikTok to lure victims into violent attacks.

Three suspects were arrested in Ruai, Nairobi County, after detectives said they used an anonymous TikTok account to contact unsuspecting individuals and arrange meetings with them. According to investigators, the meetings were often held in abandoned or isolated areas. 

Victims were allegedly subjected to sexual assault, robbery and forced mobile money transfers. Some were also stripped of their phones and other valuables and left stranded.

The investigation in Ruai led detectives to the Benedicta area, where the three suspects were arrested. Police recovered six mobile phones and two hooded jackets believed to have been used during the attacks.

The suspects have been identified by five victims in separate cases reported in Buruburu, Embakasi and Ruai. Detectives believe the reports could be linked to a wider criminal operation.

The DCI urged Kenyans to be cautious when communicating with strangers online, warning that digital identities can easily be manipulated. The agency advised people not to allow someone they have met online to take them to a secluded or isolated location. It also urged people meeting online contacts in person to choose safe, public places and ensure that someone they trust knows where they are.

Platforms such as TikTok have become widely used by young people, making awareness of online safety an important part of preventing exploitation and other crimes. The DCI said investigations were continuing to identify additional victims and establish whether other people were involved in the alleged network.

Authorities are urging members of the public to remain vigilant when interacting with strangers online and to report suspicious activity to the police.
