Kalonzo, Sifuna and Gachagua Lead Opposition Push Ahead of 2027

Opposition leaders are stepping up political mobilisation across Kenya this weekend as they position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is expected to lead rallies in Garissa on Saturday before travelling to Tana River on Sunday. His engagements follow consultations with Coast leaders, including Nyali MP Mohamed Ali, Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako and former Cabinet secretary Aisha Jumwa.

Kalonzo has presented the meetings as part of efforts to strengthen the Coast’s political voice, with a focus on unity and inclusion. His outreach is aimed at positioning the region as an important bloc in the opposition’s national strategy.

In Nairobi, Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna is scheduled to hold a “back to base” tour after recent rallies in Bungoma. His mobilisation has been strengthened by the entry of former Trade minister Mukhisa Kituyi and former Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo.

Their involvement is intended to widen Linda Mwananchi’s support beyond its traditional areas and demonstrate growing political backing. Sifuna is expected to use the Nairobi rally to renew his criticism of the government’s record.

Meanwhile, Democratic Change Party leader Rigathi Gachagua is continuing his overseas engagements, seeking support among Kenyans in the United States. After meetings in Spokane, Washington, he is scheduled to travel to Portland.

Gachagua has highlighted the role of the diaspora in rebuilding Kenya under an opposition government, with proposed reforms focused on technology, skills transfer and justice for historically marginalised communities. In Spokane, he also told members of the Maa community that he would seek to resolve longstanding land disputes.

The opposition activities come as President William Ruto undertakes a four-day tour of Nyanza. He is launching projects and meeting local leaders in Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori.

The President’s tour is part of efforts to strengthen his support in regions that have traditionally backed the opposition. It comes as opposition parties expand their own mobilisation activities across the country and among Kenyans abroad.
