Government Warns Kenyans Over Fraudulent Overseas Job Offers

The government has urged Kenyans seeking jobs abroad to verify recruitment agencies and employment offers through official channels to avoid exploitation, forced labour and trafficking.

The warning was issued during the fourth Employment and Labour Relations Annual Symposium and Exhibition at Strathmore University in Nairobi, where government officials and other stakeholders discussed safe and rights-based labour migration.

Prospective migrant workers were advised to verify job opportunities with the Ministry of Labour and Skills Development, the National Employment Authority and the State Department for Diaspora Affairs. 

Authorities also stressed that recruitment agencies must be licensed and that employment contracts should be authenticated by labour officers before workers leave the country. Officials said the verification process helps ensure that employment terms are legitimate and reduces the risk of workers being deceived by fraudulent job offers.

The government has previously warned about rogue agents and unregulated recruitment schemes that promise lucrative jobs abroad but can leave workers facing unsafe conditions and exploitation. Bilateral labour agreements with destination countries are intended to protect workers by promoting fair wages, decent working conditions and access to dispute resolution. 

Recruitment firms that breach the required standards may face enforcement action. The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has also warned about irregular migration routes and fraudulent job offers. Some cases have involved forced labour, sexual exploitation and trafficking, including in conflict zones and cyber-enabled scam compounds in Southeast Asia.

Labour migration provides employment opportunities for many young Kenyans, but workers can face significant risks when recruitment is not properly regulated. The government is therefore urging prospective migrants to use authorised recruitment channels, obtain accurate information and understand their employment rights before travelling.

Officials said the measures are intended to help Kenyans access overseas employment through legitimate recruitment processes while reducing their exposure to exploitation and trafficking.
