Uhuru Kenyatta Turns ‘Sponyo’ Jibe Into Humour

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta joked about the “sponyo” label used against him by political rivals during a funeral in Murang’a County on Friday.

Speaking at the burial of Christine Waruguru Kariuki in Kiharu, Uhuru said he had decided to read prepared remarks rather than speak off the cuff, saying his words could otherwise be misinterpreted by the media.

“Usually me I speak off cuff, but these days life is becoming quite dangerous for me, so I have decided before the media goes to misinterpret my words, wacha nisome ile niko nayo,” he told mourners before delivering his condolence message.

After reading his remarks, the former President referred to the nickname that has featured in recent political exchanges.

“Asanteni sana, ni hayo machache kutoka kwa ‘sponyo’ tutaonana na tunaendelea kuwa pamoja,” he said, drawing laughter from the mourners. The term “sponyo”, derived from “sponsor”, has been used by President William Ruto and his allies in accusations that Uhuru is financing opposition political activities. 

Ruto repeated the allegations during a rally in Homa Bay on Thursday, accusing Uhuru of supporting leaders opposed to his administration. Ruto also revisited his political relationship with Uhuru, claiming that the two had discussed an arrangement under which each would serve as president for 10 years. He accused Uhuru of failing to support his presidential bid after their partnership ended.

Uhuru attended the funeral alongside former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and People’s Party of Kenya leader Ndindi Nyoro. The gathering came as political leaders continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro used his address to outline proposed reforms, including free education from 2028 and measures aimed at reducing the national debt.
