Maraga Meets Delaware Governor to Discuss Kenya’s Economic Challenges

Former Chief Justice David Maraga met Delaware Governor Matt Meyer to discuss Kenya’s economic and governance challenges, including energy costs, taxation, manufacturing, housing and land rights.

Maraga described the meeting as “very convivial” and said the discussions focused on barriers to business growth in Kenya. He highlighted high energy costs and taxation as factors affecting manufacturing and investment, while also stressing the need to protect land rights and address housing concerns.

Meyer has longstanding ties to Kenya. He previously lived in Nairobi, where he learned Swahili and founded Ecosandals, a social enterprise that produces footwear. His experience in Kenya added a personal dimension to the discussions with Maraga.

The meeting was part of Maraga’s United States tour, which began on 17 September and will run until 5 October. His itinerary includes Washington DC, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota, Georgia, Houston and Dallas.

The tour includes engagements with Kenyans in the diaspora, whose remittances and civic participation play an important role in Kenya’s economy and public affairs. Maraga is campaigning for the presidency under the United Green Movement ahead of the 2027 elections.

During his Delaware visit, Maraga also attended a service at St Veronica Anglican Mission Church, where he was welcomed by Canon Paul Githinji Thuo. Referring to Psalm 133, he spoke about the importance of unity and urged Kenyans to work together for the common good.

The Delaware engagements combined discussions on economic policy with a message of national unity. Maraga’s meetings in the United States form part of his wider effort to engage the Kenyan diaspora and set out his positions on economic reform, governance and social issues.
