Tim Wanyonyi Denies Returning to ODM, Reaffirms Support for Sifuna

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has denied reports that he has returned to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), reaffirming his commitment to the Linda Mwananchi movement and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 20 September, Wanyonyi said reports of his defection to ODM were misleading. He said his decision to join Linda Mwananchi followed extensive consultations with residents of Bungoma and careful consideration of what he believes is in the best interests of the county and the country.

“My decision to join Linda Mwananchi followed extensive consultations with the people of Bungoma and a careful consideration of the political direction I believe to be in the best interest of our county and country. That decision remains unchanged,” he said.

Wanyonyi was responding to remarks by Sirisia MP John Waluke, who told a rally in Bungoma that the Westlands MP had returned to ODM and was expected to become the party’s first governor of Bungoma County. Waluke praised Wanyonyi as a driver of change and a supporter of youth employment. However, his remarks led to uncertainty among Wanyonyi’s supporters, prompting the MP to clarify his position.

While acknowledging Waluke’s goodwill, Wanyonyi said it was important to distinguish between personal views and his official political position. Wanyonyi was elected to Parliament on an ODM ticket but said changing political circumstances had led him and others to pursue a different political path through Linda Mwananchi.

His statement comes as political alliances in Kenya continue to shift ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several leaders changing their political affiliations and new political formations emerging. Wanyonyi, who is the brother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, also announced the establishment of a secretariat to manage his official communications. He said the move was intended to reduce misinformation and ensure consistency in his political messaging.
