Maraga Discusses Kenya’s Democracy and Youth Participation at Princeton University

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has held a discussion with students at Princeton University on democracy, leadership and the role of the next generation in shaping Kenya’s future.

Speaking on 21 September at an event titled Kenya’s Future: Democracy, Leadership, and the Next Generation, Maraga addressed Kenyan and African students on governance, judicial independence, accountability, elections and the role of institutions in protecting democracy.

The session was moderated by Professor Mahiri Mwita and included an open question-and-answer session, giving students an opportunity to challenge and expand on Maraga’s views. Maraga said Africa’s future depends on young people being willing to question those in authority and demand accountability.

“Sharper questions produce sharper minds, and this room gave me both,” he said, praising the students for their engagement.

He also argued that the continent’s progress would depend on a generation willing to scrutinise those in power and consider new approaches to leadership. The Princeton event was organised through the university’s governance and civic engagement programmes, with support from the Human Rights Initiative and programmes linked to African Studies.

The engagement was part of Maraga’s ongoing tour of the United States, which began on 17 September and is scheduled to run until 5 October. His itinerary includes Washington DC, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota, Georgia and Texas.
