US Reveals Its Position on Kenya’s 2027 Election

The United States has reaffirmed its neutrality ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election, with ambassador nominee Henry Wooster telling US lawmakers that Washington’s priority is to support a peaceful and stable electoral process.

Appearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday, Wooster said the Trump administration would not support any candidate or political party in the election, which is scheduled for August 2027. He said the US would instead monitor developments and encourage calm throughout the electoral period.

“Our watchword for August 2027 is stability,” Wooster told the committee. “That is exactly what we want.”

Wooster was nominated in June to succeed Meg Whitman, who left her post as US ambassador to Kenya in 2024. If confirmed, he said his engagement with Nairobi would focus on maintaining stability while respecting Kenya’s political process.

His comments come as political activity in Kenya intensifies, with rival political groups seeking to strengthen their support at home and among the diaspora.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), is currently in the United States meeting members of the Kenyan diaspora as he seeks to build support for his political ambitions. 

President William Ruto has also engaged Kenyans living abroad, including during his recent visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Wooster also outlined wider US diplomatic priorities, including plans to strengthen military and strategic cooperation between Washington and Nairobi if he is confirmed. Kenya has remained an important US partner in regional security and counterterrorism efforts.
