Kalonzo Takes Presidential Campaign to Nyanza and Western Kenya

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will take his presidential campaign to Nyanza and Western Kenya this weekend, with stops planned in Busia and Siaya counties.

On Saturday, Mr Musyoka is scheduled to visit Bumala and Nambale in Busia County before travelling to Bondo in Siaya County on Sunday. In Bondo, he will attend a church service at St Michael’s All Angels Cathedral before holding a meet-the-people tour.

Bondo is the birthplace of the late Raila Odinga and has long been associated with his political base. Mr Musyoka’s visit comes as opposition leaders seek to build support in regions that were closely aligned with Mr Odinga.

The campaign has also faced disruption. Opposition leaders recently cut short their speeches after youths pelted their vehicles with stones. Kalonzo has urged opposition leaders to avoid pursuing individual interests, warning that divisions could weaken their position ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, allies of Senator Edwin Sifuna have made an early move to reserve the name ‘Ukombozi’ for 90 days, reflecting competition within the opposition. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has also maintained his opposition to President William Ruto, adding to the shifting political alliances ahead of the election.

Kalonzo's legal background has featured prominently in his campaign. His role as lead counsel in a constitutional petition challenging a controversial sale has been cited as part of his record of defending the public interest.

His campaign has focused on fairness and inclusion, with Kalonzo presenting himself as a leader who would prioritise the interests of ordinary Kenyans. The visits to Nyanza and Western Kenya form part of the opposition’s efforts to mobilise support ahead of the 2027 election.
