Kenyan Academic Dr Grace Komol Wins UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching

Kenyan academic Dr Grace Jepkemboi Komol has been named among 12 University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty members to receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The award is one of UAB’s top honours for teaching and recognises faculty members whose work has made a significant contribution to student learning and the university’s academic environment. Dr Komol has been a member of UAB’s faculty for 16 years, during which she has developed a strong record in teaching and academic mentorship.

Her work in doctoral education was a key part of her recognition. In UAB’s Early Childhood Education PhD programme, she has served as chair, co-chair or committee member on 37 doctoral committees. Through these roles, Dr Komol has supported doctoral students as they undertake advanced research and develop their academic work.

UAB said the award recognises faculty members whose commitment to teaching supports the university’s educational mission and makes a lasting difference to students. Dr Komol’s recognition also reflects her long-standing involvement in mentoring students and supporting research training. Her work with doctoral candidates has contributed to the development of scholars and professionals in the field of early childhood education.

The President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recognises the role of faculty members in teaching, mentorship and student development.
