KikoRomeo Takes Kenyan Fashion and Craftsmanship to Moscow Fashion Week

Kenyan fashion label KikoRomeo has showcased its latest collection, Ewala, at Moscow Fashion Week, bringing Kenyan design and craftsmanship to the Russian capital.

The Nairobi-based label was part of the official runway programme, where it presented a collection combining traditional influences with contemporary African design. Ewala was created by KikoRomeo founder Ann McCreath and Iona McCreath, with a focus on sustainable production and locally rooted craftsmanship.

The collection features rain-fed organic cotton, handwoven fabrics and zero-waste construction methods. The designers also used hand-carved coconut shell buttons, incorporating natural materials and traditional craft techniques into the garments.

The showcase provided an opportunity to promote Kenya's cultural heritage through fashion. Kenya's Deputy Head of Mission in Moscow, Dr Ambassador Joseph Warui, said the event allowed Russian audiences to engage with the country's culture through creative work.

“Through fashion, Kenya is sharing its story, values and identity with new audiences, demonstrating the power of the creative economy to strengthen international friendships,” Warui said.

Warui said fashion could serve as a means of cultural exchange while also supporting international relations. He highlighted the wider role of creative industries in promoting cultural connections and creating opportunities for cooperation.

He also recognised Brian James Kihindas, Creative Director of Nairobi Fashion Week, for helping establish cooperation between Nairobi Fashion Week and Moscow Fashion Week. The partnership between the two fashion platforms provides opportunities for designers and creative organisations in Kenya and Russia to exchange ideas and showcase their work to new audiences.

KikoRomeo's participation in the Moscow event also provided an international platform for Ewala and its focus on sustainable fashion, cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship. Warui said the Kenyan designs presented in Moscow reflected the country's traditions and creative identity, while the event could contribute to closer engagement between Kenya and Russia.
