Raila's Family Plans First Anniversary Commemorations at Migwena
Migwena Grounds will host commemorations marking the first anniversary of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death on October 15, with a mausoleum at the site set to be unveiled during the event.
Preparations at the venue are nearing completion as the family organises a programme featuring prayers, reflection and a celebration of Raila’s life. The mausoleum, which has been under construction for the past two months, is also close to completion ahead of its official unveiling.
The choice of Migwena Grounds reflects Raila’s long-standing connection to the site. Family members said he regularly attended sporting events held there, particularly local India sports competitions, and maintained close ties with the area.
They said the venue holds important personal and community memories of Raila, making it a suitable location for the anniversary gathering. The family has invited members of the public to attend the commemorations, which are expected to bring together relatives, friends, political associates and other admirers.
The anniversary will take place one year after Raila died on October 15, 2025. It will provide an opportunity for family members, supporters and the public to remember his life and reflect on the political career that made him one of Kenya’s most prominent figures.
The unveiling of the mausoleum will form a central part of the commemorations. The permanent memorial is intended to preserve Raila’s memory and provide a place where future generations and members of the public can pay tribute to him.
