Kalonzo Urges Opposition to Name Opposition’s 2027 Presidential Candidate

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged opposition parties to agree on a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election, expressing confidence that a united coalition can defeat President William Ruto.

Speaking in Machakos during an economic empowerment event organised by Governor Wavinya Ndeti, Kalonzo called on opposition leaders to speed up negotiations and build a common platform. He said dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration could strengthen the opposition’s position in the next election.

Kalonzo also appealed to residents of the Lower Eastern region, particularly young people, to obtain national identity cards and register as voters ahead of the next voter registration exercise by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). He said voter registration was essential to ensuring the region had a strong voice in national politics.

The former Vice-President criticised President Ruto over his development pledges, arguing that some promises might not be fulfilled before the end of his term. He cited water infrastructure projects, questioning whether the government could deliver on its commitments within the available time. He also compared the current administration’s promises with projects undertaken by previous governments.

His remarks came as opposition leaders continued discussions on how to select a joint presidential candidate. Although several leaders have expressed willingness to support a common flag bearer, negotiations remain complicated by competing ambitions and regional interests.

Former Attorney-General Justin Muturi has also called for the opposition to settle on its presidential candidate without further delay. Muturi, who has publicly endorsed Kalonzo, warned that prolonged uncertainty could weaken the coalition’s preparations and undermine its momentum.

He said opposition supporters wanted clear leadership as political activity increased ahead of the election. His position reflects growing calls within the opposition for leaders to resolve their differences and present a unified candidate.

The selection process remains a key issue for opposition parties seeking to challenge Ruto. Leaders must balance individual presidential ambitions with regional interests and the need to build a coalition capable of coordinating its campaign across the country.

At the same event, Governor Wavinya Ndeti announced the distribution of equipment and resources intended to support thousands of residents across Machakos County. She said the initiative was designed to help households develop sustainable sources of income and improve their livelihoods.

Wavinya also criticised politicians who distribute cash during public events, arguing that providing productive resources offers more lasting benefits. She said economic empowerment programmes should help residents generate their own income rather than depend on short-term hand-outs.
