Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang was driving a silver Toyota Fielder, registration number KCM 508L, along Uganda Road when detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) cornered him. Investigators said the fugitive officer was looking for a buyer for the vehicle to fund his daily survival after months in hiding.

Following his arrest, officers escorted Sang to Eldoret Police Station for processing. His capture marks a major step in the ongoing probe into the targeted killings of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.

Detectives suspect the murders, committed ten months apart, stem from a bitter property dispute and divorce between Dr Mutiso’s husband, Professor David Musyimi Ndetei, and his former wife, Rose Mbithe Mulwa. DCI officers allege that the dispute provided the motive for both attacks, with several individuals recruited to plan, finance, or execute the operations.

Sang is believed to have played a central role in coordinating the logistics for the hits, including maintaining contact with a suspect already in custody. His arrest brings into custody the final remaining suspect wanted in connection with the two killings.

Prior to his capture in Uasin Gishu County, Sang had successfully evaded a multi-county dragnet. Detectives had previously extended their search to Busia following tips that he intended to cross the border into Tanzania.

The case has drawn sharp public interest due to the repeated involvement of serving law enforcement officers as alleged hitmen and coordinators.

The late Mbobu, a prominent lawyer, university lecturer, and former chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was killed on September 9, 2025. A gunman riding a motorcycle shot him along Magadi Road in Karen, near Galleria Mall, as he drove home from work.

The investigation into Mbobu’s death stalled for months until September 2026, when the DCI arrested Police Constable Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot. Ballistic tests on a Ceska pistol issued to Cheruiyot linked the firearm directly to the crime scene.

Ten months after Mbobu's death, on July 29, 2026, Dr Mutiso was assassinated along Raila Odinga Way in Upper Hill, near Kenyatta National Hospital. Attackers intercepted her vehicle before opening fire. She served as the Head of Research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has since approved murder charges against five suspects in connection with Mbobu’s assassination. The charged individuals include Mulwa, her children Chris Mulwa and Angela Mulwa, alongside police constables Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kipkemei Borbor.

The five suspects were scheduled to take their pleas on October 27, 2026, pending the submission of court-ordered mental assessment reports for the two police officers. Meanwhile, Professor Ndetei recently appeared at the Milimani High Court in a wheelchair to present an affidavit opposing bail for his ex-wife and her children.

DCI officials noted that while Sang’s arrest completes a critical link in the chain, investigations are still active to establish if other accomplices were involved.

"No rank, status or affiliation places anyone above the law," the agency said in a statement following the operation.
