As former President Uhuru Kenyatta marked his 65th birthday with a quiet family gathering in the countryside, he delivered a pointed political message cautioning the Mt Kenya region against repeating past voting errors in the 2027 General Election.

Uhuru turned 65 on Monday, October 26, 2026, opting for a low-key celebration far from the political limelight. Joined by his wife, Margaret, their three children, Jomo, Muhoho, and Ngina, and a small circle of close relatives, he shared a birthday cake at his preferred rural retreat.

Born in Gatundu on October 26, 1961, to Kenya's founding president Jomo Kenyatta and Mama Ngina, the former head of state has increasingly favoured farm life and rural tranquillity over city living since leaving office. His preferred country property features well-kept lawns, tall trees, and a rustic lodge with wooden finishes, serving as his main base alongside his ongoing regional peace envoy duties.

Marking the milestone in a vernacular radio interview broadcast in Kikuyu, Uhuru reflected on his complicated relationship with his home region. He noted that he had long forgiven Mt Kenya voters for defying his political directive in 2022, when he broke ranks with his then-deputy, William Ruto, to endorse veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Despite Uhuru's vigorous campaigns for the Azimio coalition candidate, the region overwhelmingly threw its weight behind Ruto on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. Mt Kenya delivered roughly 3.5 million of Ruto's 7.1 million national votes, helping him edge out Raila, who garnered approximately 6.9 million votes.

Looking ahead to the 2027 polls, however, the former president appeared to draw a firm line regarding future political choices.

"I forgave you long ago. To err is not a mistake, but to repeat it," Uhuru said, adding that he was confident voters would not make the same choice twice.

He urged leaders and residents across the country to prioritise national unity, dialogue, and forgiveness over political hostility and insults. The Office of the Fourth President of the Republic of Kenya issued a statement on Facebook celebrating his years of service to the nation and the African continent, wishing him good health and peace.

Political players also joined the chorus of well-wishes. Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, artist Muigai Njoroge, and public figure Moses Nsereko praised his leadership, offered prayers, and thanked him for his service.

Additionally, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, extended birthday greetings to the former president.
