Key medical facilities and public institutions across Nairobi are preparing for a 24-hour water supply shutdown starting Monday morning, as maintenance works affect broad stretches of the capital alongside planned disruptions in Kisumu.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company confirmed that the shutdown will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, November 9, and end at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10. The utility stated that the outage is necessary to install new pipe connections near Kianda School along Waiyaki Way, a project aimed at improving long-term supply reliability.

Among the affected sites are major health institutions, including Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi Hospital, Mbagathi Hospital, Forces Memorial Hospital, and the KEMRI flats. Critical security and public installations will also be impacted, such as the Department of Defence, Langata Women's Prison, Dog Unit in Langata, and Uhuru Park.

Residential estates facing the cut include Westlands, Riverside, Parklands, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Upper Hill, Lower Hill, Madaraka, Kibera, Jamhuri, Amboseli, Hatheru, Chalbi, Woodley, and areas along Ngong Road, alongside institutions like Kenya High School.

"Customers in the affected areas are advised to use the available water sparingly during this period," the utility said in a public notice, apologising for the inconvenience and asking for patience while technical teams complete the infrastructure works.

The upcoming outage is the third major disruption for Nairobi residents in recent weeks. A 29-hour shutdown from November 5 to November 6 affected areas including Kasarani, Mwiki, Roysambu, Zimmerman, Kahawa Barracks, Kenyatta University, Kayole, and Komarock to facilitate connections on the Karimenu Transmission Pipeline. Between October 26 and October 29, emergency repairs on the NCT-Kigoro-Gigiri-Kabete pipeline also cut supply to Westlands, Kilimani, Lavington, and Kibera.

In western Kenya, Kisumu residents face a separate week-long disruption starting Tuesday, November 10, at 9:00 a.m. The Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company announced that a valve throttling trial along the Kajulu Main Line will run until 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17, causing low water pressure and temporary outages as the company prepares to install bulk meters for better supply management.

Nairobi Water advised domestic and commercial customers to make adequate storage arrangements and prioritize essential needs before the Monday morning shutdown.
