Linda Mwananchi Accuses Ruto Administration of Fuelling Violence After Attack on Kalonzo Musyoka Convoy in Migori

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Linda Mwananchi movement has accused President William Ruto's administration of fuelling political violence and intolerance, after an attack on a campaign caravan led by Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka in Migori County in western Kenya.

The movement, whose name in Kiswahili translates as protect the ordinary citizen, made the charge in the aftermath of the incident, accusing the Ruto administration of stoking political violence and intolerance at a moment when politicians across the country are already mobilising for the next national vote.

Musyoka was leading the caravan as part of WPF campaigning ahead of Kenya's next general election, which the constitutional calendar places on August 10, 2027. A veteran politician first elected to Parliament in the 1980s, he held the foreign affairs portfolio across successive governments before serving as Kenya's vice president from 2008 to 2013 in the grand coalition administration formed after the disputed 2007 election, a government with both a president and a prime minister at its apex. He has been a fixture of opposition politics ever since, running at or near the top of national tickets in successive contests.

The attack unfolded in Migori County, a border territory in the Nyanza region that faces Tanzania to the south and counted more than 1.1 million residents at the 2019 national census. The county lies in a belt of western Kenya that has voted overwhelmingly for opposition presidential candidates in past elections, terrain that any contender building a national coalition must carry. Migori is also a gold mining and sugarcane growing area, and past election seasons in the region have seen scattered violence.

Accounts of the assault have not specified who carried it out, how many vehicles were struck or whether anyone was injured. The backdrop, however, is Kenya's most traumatic electoral episode: the disputed December 2007 presidential election triggered clashes that killed about 1,100 people and displaced an estimated 600,000 before a power-sharing agreement, sealed in February 2008, ended the crisis.

That history touches the current president directly. Ruto won the August 2022 presidential election with just over 50 percent of the vote and took office the following month, but years earlier he had faced charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court over the 2007-08 violence. He denied the charges, and prosecutors abandoned the case in 2016 after several witnesses withdrew.

In office, Ruto has governed through repeated bouts of unrest. Nationwide protests against tax increases in mid-2024 turned deadly and ended only after the president declined to sign that year's Finance Bill, and political competition has sharpened since as opposition figures tour the country seeking support for 2027.

With roughly nine months to the vote, attention now turns to whether Kenya's police open an investigation into the Migori attack, whether the Ruto administration answers the Linda Mwananchi accusation publicly, and whether Musyoka presses ahead with planned campaign tours in western Kenya. Security around campaign events is expected to become a central issue in the race. The 2027 contest will be the fourth general election under the 2010 Constitution, adopted in the shadow of the 2007-08 crisis, which also created the devolved county governments that Migori belongs to.
