#RejectFinanceBill2024 Trends in US, Canada, Australia and Beyond

The recent protests in Kenya against the proposed Finance Bill 2024 have captured global attention.

On June 20, 2024, thousands of Kenyans took to the streets to voice their opposition to the bill's proposed tax increases which aim to raise an additional 346.7 billion Kenyan shillings in revenue. The demonstrations reflect growing concerns about the potential economic impact on citizens already grappling with rising living costs. The Finance Bill has become a focal point of public discontent due to its array of new taxes and levies. The protests in Nairobi were met with a strong police response, including the use of tear gas and water cannons.

Reports indicate that at least 283 protesters were arrested including four journalists, prompting criticism from human rights organizations. The protests have resonated beyond Kenya's borders with the hashtag #RejectFinanceBill2024 gaining traction internationally, particularly in countries with significant Kenyan populations. In the United States, the hashtag ranked as the fourth most trending topic, while in Canada it reached the 19th position despite generating more posts than other trending topics. Gulf countries, home to many Kenyan expatriates, also saw significant engagement with the hashtag.

Neighboring East African nations demonstrated strong solidarity with the Kenyan protesters. In Tanzania, #RejectFinanceBill2024 became the top trending topic with Foreign Affairs Minister January Makamba praising the demonstrations as proof of democratic values. Uganda and Rwanda also saw the hashtag trending as did Ethiopia and South Sudan. The global reach of the protests extends to Australia, where a substantial Kenyan diaspora community helped propel the hashtag to the 18th trending position. However, it is notable that the hashtag did not feature prominently in some countries with traditionally strong ties to Kenya, such as South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and the United Kingdom.

If only we could transform and transfer that effort into fighting corruption, and unemployment we would be sitting on top of the food chain...
Since the issue is about tax, let's increase out tax base by creating employment which would employs more workers and thus expanding our tax base, instead of overburdening the thinning workforce.Sadly things will get worse. The gov. is already talking about massive layoffs.
Well for those who believe in the teachings of Son of Mariam, could you please pray for a miracle?A miracle like the current regime stepping down because they have failed to deliver.Or do we have to force them out?

Maxiley (not verified)     Thu, 06/20/2024 @ 01:54pm

Is that how generation Z looks like? No wonder they have been described as lazy. Dressed in tattered clothes with multicolors all over, and standing tough, but in reality weak and does not inspire confidence.
We need the tough looking generation of tough, rugged looking men with beards. Men who would instill fear in other men and melt heart of women. Men with big balls...We cannot turn lions into lionesses and expect the jungle to have a king...Our leaders have to be tough and resolute.Above all deliver on their promises.

@maxiley, each generation undergoes cultural changes! The way of life for these guys is completely different from the way you grew up chasing goats and chicken out there in Kakamega

You can’t blanket judge Gen Z simply because you don’t like the way they physically appear to your eyes. Their attire and also the beards make them who they are, and perhaps they are more stronger men than yourself!

These rugged kids could even impregnate your Mexican wife simply by a mare look. They are not joking as they demand a better future for themselves

They are tough, determined, well mentally organized, structured, and they are ready to fight your Ruto to the bitter end to make sure he does not continue to send their country to HELL.

You have given these guys some addressed/unflattering adjectives simply because you are old school, too old to understand what they are fighting for because you believe in status quo, and you just don’t care about their future, and the future of their children’s children. Change is on the way and you should rush here to insult these kids just to experience a doctor feel good moment without using your small brains.

Like I have told you on a number of occasions, all you think about is hitting some pussy, drinking busaa, and chasing other men’s wives like any other Luhya around. What these kids are doing is way above your pay grade!

Give these kids a break because they are determined to change the dirty politics Ruto is using to suppress them.

@ Jane, I hear you,but I would rather go in the trenches with GenX
Some of Gen Z are not even 16 years old why bring impregnating in the equation? My Mexican beauty would not even talk to a 20 year old let alone smile.
These are kids. They have yet to learn the complexities of life.So dont get carried away by their reckless behavior.

Can you stop sticking your damn foot 🦶 in your ugly mouth @maxiley?? Every bad thing happening in Kenya affects your very body including the Gen Z. How old do you expect them to be for their views to be considered? Old folks in their late 70s like you are main problem to the growth and development of our country! You keep talking about your Mexican sinorita like she is the woman with a snappy pussy in the entire hood. You are literally confused and you seem not to understand what @jane is saying.

I will not lower myself to your level of intellectual inferiority. However I would urge you to learn to stick an issues at hand ,instead of employing the straw man strategy of avoiding them. Please re-read my post. Now where do I suggest that Gen.Z should not express their views.
Iam a strong adherent of any policy that would encourage free flow of ideas and opinions of public interest. In other words freedom to speak ones mind without fear of the government coming after you...
I have also maintained that, we should always question authority. I have always asked where our community activists are ,whenever there is injustice in the society. So please learn to stick to issues. My two cents.

@maxiley, what are the “complexities of life” are you talking about that Gen Z do not understand?? The Gen Z have always been overlooked, under estimated, humiliated, and treated unfairly by those corrupt leaders who are stealing blind while we watch. What is it that is left for us while you nearly dying old folks have stolen everything?? We will fight to the bitter end to stop the kind of madness that is going on with this Ruto government. He is our enemy because he does not care about our future. Don’t be shallow to just judge our demands based on the clothes we wear! Have a good day paw! I am a Gen Z talking to you old man @maxiley. The Gen Z wants to have a promising future which is being taken away and destroyed by your kind of folks. Your kids will be worse dressed if you ever get a chance to impregnate a real woman! You are just a weak man engulfed with a lot of fears and insecurities about the Gen Z!

Which real man fights young children in the modern day? Fearing young ones and their future is your worst enemy as a man. Y’all have denied them everything - good education, jobs, clean air, etc and they are now fighting back…!

How did the youth WRONG you??? Let them fight for haki yao. Leave the plastic yellow skinned softies alone and come to a come to “Jesus” moment with a real sister! 🍇🤣🤡🔥🙏. Please don’t portray your immaturity to the whole world because the Gen Z will expose your ignorant self and there is nothing you can do about it. Stop fighting a losing battle with kids…

Imara Daima (not verified)     Fri, 06/21/2024 @ 11:53pm

The former president of Kenya Ndugu Uhuru Ngina Kamau once said, "On a daily basis, Kenya loses two billion shillings in the looting of state funds." In a year, this amounts to about 730 billion shillings! WoW!

Have you seen the caravan of big vehicles that follows Samoei's on his endless trips all over the republic? Just imagine what would happen and the money saved if he would start working in his office located on Harambee Avenue for a change. This will definitely save Kenyans lots of shillings annually.
What a big change would happen if he started using modern technology to communicate with other heads of states in the world, instead of his endless international trips.

If I were Ndugu Samoei, I would embark on ending the institution of bribery and the stealing of money from the public coffers immediately. By doing so, it would balance the budget and return Kenya back to normalcy like the Republic of Rwanda!

Maxiley (not verified)     Sat, 06/22/2024 @ 10:23am

@Ndugu Imara Daima, what you have eloquently stated here is a patent segue into my first comment on this page. How long have we had corruption in our society? Granted that this vice is in every known human society, our level is at a crisis point;if what Uhuru said is anything go by.And examples are abound...
We have let this corruption go on for far too long.In fact you will be hard pressed not to read about some corruption in our dailies.
Now the question is what do we do? Yes voting out current regime is a start. But who do we replace it with? I refuse to believe that out of 50 million people we cannot get at least 500,000 men and women of integrity, and ethics to run Kenya. So folks, next time you vote, put these two on the fore front as MUST have requirements for your candidate .

Both of you @maxiley and @fake guest are too old to understand anything leave alone understanding the Gen Z concerns about a country Ruto is taking to the dogs. You can keep fighting the young people until a real revolution sweeps you deep in the hole. The youth have said “no more unfair tax levies” because the collected monies are going to the pockets of a very few people through corruption. What is so for grown men of your age to understand unless your low mental IQ does not allow you to think like a grown up dude @maxiley????
