At 27 years old, Francis Njeri exemplifies the reality that success can emerge from unexpected pathways.
Originally from Likoni in Mombasa, Francis initially established himself in Nairobi trading clothing and footwear at Imenti House in the central business district. Despite his entrepreneurial efforts, he experienced the pervasive sentiment among young Kenyans that opportunities in the country are constrained. Motivated by aspirations for an improved life, he decided to relocate to Qatar in 2022.
Francis' venture, however, encountered many obstacles. Unexpected health complications necessitated a prolonged three-month hiatus, ultimately compelling him to return to Kenya. His subsequent attempts to secure employment in Nairobi proved unsuccessful, prompting a strategic relocation to Mombasa where he felt a stronger sense of connection. A crucial transformation occurred through his engagement with the Tubonge Youth Initiative, where he volunteered to support community development by promoting peace, security, and entrepreneurial empowerment.
This involvement introduced him to Somo Africa, an organization dedicated to providing comprehensive training and support for emerging entrepreneurs. During a three-month intensive program focused on business management and entrepreneurship, Njeri discovered a talent for artistic engraving. What had previously been a casual hobby evolved into a professional opportunity.
"My approach to engraving transformed from a recreational activity to a viable economic pursuit," Francis reflects.
By leveraging his newly refined skills, Francis developed a specialized business creating intricate designs on diverse surfaces including wood, metal, and glass. His entrepreneurial venture successfully carved a distinctive market niche. Francis advocates for a strategic approach to professional development, encouraging peers to cultivate and explore local opportunities before seeking employment abroad.
"Remarkable opportunities exist within our national borders," he asserts. "Many individuals possess extraordinary skills that remain unexplored."
