Germany Opens Job Market to Skilled Kenyans in Healthcare, ICT, and Hospitality

As Germany faces critical labour shortages in key sectors, Kenya and Germany are strengthening their labour ties through the Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement (MMPA), signed in September 2024.

This agreement, now nearing full implementation, establishes a structured framework to facilitate ethical and seamless migration for Kenyan professionals seeking opportunities in Germany. A recent high-level meeting in Nairobi, led by Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline K. Njogu and Alexander Fierley, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Nairobi, highlighted the growing demand for skilled Kenyan workers in Germany, particularly in healthcare, hospitality, and ICT.

Germany currently hosts approximately 14,800 Kenyans. The Kenya-Germany MMPA aims to streamline the mobility process, with the AHK Mobility Centre playing a crucial role in connecting Kenyan professionals with German employers. The centre, operating under the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce for Eastern Africa (AHK), ensures regulated and transparent placement procedures, representing Germany's economic interests in the region.

During the meeting, the German delegation acknowledged Kenya's robust pool of skilled workers and affirmed the significant opportunities available in specialised sectors within the German labour market. Discussions also emphasised the need for closer collaboration between the State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA), AHK, and the Diaspora Placement Agency (DPA) to ensure smooth transitions for Kenyan workers.

Dr. Monika Erath, a delegate at AHK, and key representatives from the Skills and Expertise Division of the Kenyan government were also present. Their involvement underscores the commitment from both nations to strengthen labour exchanges. The initiative not only benefits individual workers but also enhances Kenya's reputation as a source of skilled talent poised for global impact.
