Kenya’s Diaspora Population Hits 4 Million as Overseas Births Surge

The number of Kenyan children born outside the country has risen sharply, reflecting the growing impact of government-backed foreign employment initiatives.

New data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows a 15 percent increase in registered births abroad in 2024 compared to the previous year.

The Kenya Vital Statistics Report documents 5,694 births registered by Kenyan citizens living overseas, up from 4,954 in 2023.

Analysts attribute this increase to a combination of factors, including Kenyans seeking improved economic opportunities and government programmes facilitating overseas job placements. The United States hosts the largest segment of the Kenyan diaspora, estimated at 159,000. It also leads in birth registrations, accounting for 1,649 cases, or approximately 29 percent of the total.

The United Kingdom follows, with 1,076 births, representing 18.9 percent. The United Arab Emirates recorded 361 births. Birth registrations were also notable in Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and neighbouring East African countries like Uganda and Tanzania. These figures illustrate the diversified global presence of Kenyan nationals.

KNBS data indicates that most diaspora mothers are between 30 and 34, a demographic known for career-oriented decisions. Under Kenyan law, children born to Kenyan parents abroad retain automatic citizenship, maintaining legal ties with their country of origin. A separate estimate by the Parliamentary Budget Office puts the total Kenyan diaspora population at four million.
