Nicholas Kiplangat Rotich, known by his stage name Chongin, died in a tragic road accident on Monday.

The collision, which involved a matatu and a tractor, claimed the lives of five people in Bomet County, Kenya. Chongin was among the fatalities. The accident occurred at 4:00 pm on the Kiptagich-Silibwet road. According to authorities, the matatu carrying Chongin collided head-on with a tractor in the Salaek-Kimugul area. Thirteen survivors are currently receiving treatment at Tenwek Hospital while five others have been discharged. Chongin was a beloved comedian and musician who brought joy to many through his performances.

Born in Transmara in 1982, he derived his stage name from "Chonginiot," a name given to him by his grandmother. Interestingly, a music video he released three years ago featured him portraying a deceased individual who miraculously comes back to life. Chongin was known for his willingness to tackle unconventional themes. In previous interviews, he expressed his openness to portraying biblical events such as the crucifixion, even acknowledging the discomfort such portrayals might cause. This willingness to explore sensitive topics was also evident in his recent TikTok videos, which addressed serious issues like the high cost of living.

Chongin's artistic journey began in 2019 with a collaboration with secular artist Ann Chebaibai. Their first song, "Omuiten," was a major success. He later transitioned into comedy, finding his passion for making people laugh in the Litein trading centre. He even worked as a video vixen for established artists like gospel singer Joyce Langat. The loss of Chongin has deeply impacted his family and the artistic community. A family spokesperson has confirmed their identification of his body at the mortuary and announced a planned fundraiser due to the family's financial constraints.

Kalenjin Musicians Association Chairman David Rotich has expressed his grief and highlighted Chongin's talent for bringing joy to others. The accident investigation continues, with survivors reporting that the matatu experienced mechanical issues before the collision.
