Nairobi law enforcement authorities have launched an intensive search for a group of bodaboda operators implicated in the fatal assault of a university student in the Kibera slums.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, November 17, stemmed from a confrontation outside a local entertainment establishment. The deceased, identified as Sospeter Onyango Osungo, was a 23-year-old architecture student in his final year at Kirinyaga University. Known colloquially as Billionaire Evance Akoko or "Sirikal," the Gem, Siaya County native had cultivated a significant social media presence, particularly on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where he regularly displayed his opulent lifestyle. Forensic reports indicate that Akoko sustained multiple severe injuries, including seven stab wounds.
The assault, which involved both his male and female companions, has been documented through statements from five witnesses, including family members and associates present during the incident. The evening's events unfolded when Akoko arrived in an Audi Q3 with two companions at a popular establishment in Kibera. After offering to purchase beverages for all patrons present, the group proceeded to an adjacent venue featuring an Ohangla performance. Tensions escalated when Akoko's entourage encountered resistance from local bodaboda operators.
According to witness testimonies, the situation deteriorated after Akoko allegedly issued threats involving firearms, prompting the operators to label him a criminal and launch a violent attack with crude weapons. While his companions suffered serious injuries, their driver managed to escape with the vehicle and alert authorities. The automobile was subsequently impounded as evidence at the local police station. The victim's remains have been transferred to Chiromo Morgue pending forensic examination.
Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei has publicly denounced the vigilante action, emphasizing its criminal nature. "Our department consistently opposes mob justice, as it constitutes a criminal offense. A dedicated team is investigating to apprehend all perpetrators," Bungei stated.
The incident has sparked inquiries into Akoko's financial dealings, given his unexplained affluent lifestyle. His death follows the recent passing of fellow Kirinyaga University student Dennis Oduor Otieno, known as "Denno Bright," who succumbed to cardiac complications reportedly linked to substance abuse on October 10, 2024. Otieno had attributed his wealth to cryptocurrency trading and digital commerce.
