Fred Matiang’i Denies Fleeing Kenya, Says 2023 UK Trip Was Approved by State

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has publicly addressed allegations that he fled Kenya in early 2023, asserting that his departure for the United Kingdom was officially sanctioned and transparent.
In a recent televised interview, Matiang'i refuted the claims as false and damaging to his integrity. The former minister explained that his travel occurred during the transition period following the 2022 general election, before the swearing-in of the new Cabinet.
He says that President William Ruto requested outgoing Cabinet Secretaries to remain in office temporarily, necessitating formal clearance for international travel. Matiang'i says he informed the President of his travel plans and received the necessary approval.
Controversy arose after the Department of Immigration Services released Matiang'i's passport and travel details, fuelling speculation that he had left the country under suspicious circumstances. Reports also suggested he boarded a cargo plane to avoid scrutiny following a police raid on his residence.
Matiang'i has dismissed these claims as unfounded and humiliating, maintaining his journey was lawful and documented. He criticises the public dissemination of his private travel records as a breach of protocol and a violation of his dignity.
"What can be more frustrating," he askes, "than being accused of fleeing when you followed every official channel?"
Matiang'i also expresses gratitude to Kithure Kindiki, then-Interior Cabinet Secretary and now Deputy President, for his measured response during the episode, contrasting it with other inflammatory rhetoric.
