The Kenyan government has taken significant steps to streamline the passport application process for citizens seeking employment abroad.
The Immigration and Citizen Services Department has introduced dedicated Migrant Labour counters, aligning with President William Ruto's commitment to expedite passport issuance for job seekers. This initiative aims to provide passports within a week and covers air travel expenses for successful applicants. To utilize these new counters, applicants must present necessary documents, including proof of intent from relevant institutions. The Interior Ministry's notice outlines this requirement which is designed to accelerate the application process and reduce bureaucratic obstacles.
Concurrent with this development, the Directorate of Immigration Services (DIS) has suspended appointment requirements for passport collection, allowing applicants to retrieve their documents directly from the submission station. In a bid to enhance transparency and accessibility, the DIS has implemented a tracking service for passport applications. By sending their E-Citizen tracking number to 22222, applicants can receive real-time updates on their application status. This service aims to provide greater clarity and ease of access to information for all applicants.
The DIS has also issued a cautionary notice regarding uncollected passports. The department has reported that 110,059 passports have not been collected further announcing that these documents will be discarded if they are not claimed within six months from July 31st. President Ruto's initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to address youth unemployment in Kenya. With over 6 million unemployed youths, the government is actively seeking both domestic and international job opportunities.
The President has emphasized the importance of facilitating young Kenyans' access to overseas employment, viewing it as a means to alleviate pressure on the domestic job market. During a recent address in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, President Ruto highlighted the availability of 400,000 job opportunities for Kenyans in various countries. He further urged local MPs to encourage youth participation in this program.
