USCIS Reminds Immigrants in the US to Update Address Within 10 Days

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is reminding immigrants residing in the US of their legal obligation to report any change of address within 10 days of moving. 

Failure to do so can lead to significant delays in processing immigration applications and even result in legal complications, including potential removal proceedings. While the US Postal Service (USPS) offers mail forwarding services, this does not apply to official USCIS correspondence. Important documents such as appointment notices, interview invitations, and Requests for Evidence will not be forwarded. 

Immigrants must directly update their address with USCIS to ensure they receive these critical communications and can respond promptly, as missed deadlines can jeopardise their immigration status. This requirement applies to nearly all non-citizen residents, with exceptions primarily for individuals holding diplomatic visas (A or G visas) or those admitted under the Visa Waiver Program. 

The legal basis for this requirement lies in federal law, which mandates that non-citizens keep their address information current with the government. Non-compliance can result in fines and delays. USCIS recommends using the Enterprise Change of Address (E-COA) tool, available through its online account system, as the most efficient way to update address information. This online method provides immediate confirmation of the change, reducing the risk of errors or miscommunication. 

Immigrants who prefer to submit address changes by mail can use Form AR-11 (Alien’s Change of Address Card). The agency, however, strongly suggests using the online E-COA tool for faster and more reliable processing. For those with pending or approved applications, it is especially important to ensure that all case-related details are properly linked to the new address. Providing USCIS with all relevant receipt numbers will help ensure the uninterrupted continuation of immigration proceedings. Some visa categories and immigration statuses may have specific address reporting requirements. 

USCIS advises individuals to consult its Policy Manual for any case-specific instructions. Adhering to these procedures is essential to avoid unnecessary delays or complications. Navigating the complexities of US immigration procedures can be challenging, and USCIS emphasises that updating an address is a small but critical step that can prevent major setbacks. Immigrants can protect their legal status and avoid potential enforcement actions by keeping their records current. 

USCIS urges immigrants to take swift action when relocating to a new residence. The message from USCIS is clear: updating an address is a mandatory requirement, not an optional formality. Immigrants who move should update their address with USCIS immediately to ensure a smooth immigration process.
