President Ruto to Empower Youth with Ksh50,000 Business Grants

The Kenyan government has unveiled a Ksh5 billion youth enterprise fund.

The initiative, dubbed the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA), aims to tackle the pervasive issues of unemployment and economic disenfranchisement affecting the nation's youth. Speaking from State House, President Ruto outlined the programme's ambition to empower over 100,000 young individuals across every ward in the country, with each beneficiary receiving Ksh50,000 to either launch a new venture or scale up an existing small business.

The NYOTA initiative, supported through a five-year partnership with the World Bank, represents a concerted effort to address income insecurity and limited savings opportunities prevalent among Kenya’s youth. The programme's decentralised approach, ensuring equitable access across all wards, signals a significant shift in government policy toward localised economic development.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, in attendance at the announcement, underscored the inclusive nature of the scheme, emphasising that no region would be excluded. However, the rollout of the NYOTA programme has not been without its challenges.

Government officials have issued warnings concerning fraudulent online platforms falsely claiming to offer NYOTA-related services, urging potential applicants to exercise caution and rely exclusively on official channels. The application process is entirely free of charge.
