Kenyan Chef in US Pamela Mburo Ranks Eighth in Favourite Chef Contest with One Week Remaining
Kenyan-born chef Pamela Mburo is in eighth place in the Favourite Chef Competition in the United States, with one week remaining before the winner is announced.
The competition offers a $25,000 cash prize, a feature in Taste of Home magazine and the opportunity to cook alongside acclaimed American chef Carla Hall. Mburo is taking part for the second time and sees the contest as a chance to showcase Kenyan cuisine to a wider audience.
“Authenticity is rare these days, however my cooking and recipes aren’t,” she said, highlighting her commitment to traditional Kenyan flavours and cooking methods.
Mburo is best known for her samosas, which she prepares using seasoned minced beef, onions, bell peppers, fresh coriander and a carefully balanced blend of spices. The dish can be served as a snack, starter or main meal, making it popular with a wide range of diners.
Her focus on authentic cooking stems from her upbringing. She learned the value of fresh, home-grown ingredients from her mother and continues that practice today by growing her own herbs and vegetables. The approach reflects a farm-to-table philosophy that connects her cultural heritage with modern food trends.
Mburo has also outlined plans for the future. If she wins the competition, she intends to use the prize money to launch a food truck specialising in Kenyan cuisine in the United States.
“Winning the $25,000 grand prize would allow me to turn my dream into reality by opening a food truck that showcases the rich and diverse flavours of Kenya,” she said.
The venture would introduce East African cuisine to new audiences while offering a cultural experience centred on Kenyan food and traditions. Mburo’s participation comes as more Kenyan chefs gain recognition internationally. Fellow Kenyan chef Finess Mabola is also competing in this year’s contest, reflecting the growing presence of East African cuisine on the global culinary stage.
With only days remaining before the competition concludes, supporters are working to improve Mburo’s ranking. Regardless of the final result, she hopes her participation will help raise the profile of Kenyan cuisine and create new opportunities to share it with audiences abroad.
