Rigathi Gachagua, the late Nyeri governor Nderitu Gachagua’s brother on Wednesday won the Jubilee ticket to contest for Mathira parliamentary seat.
Rigathi was Thursday declared the Jubilee party candidate for the Mathira parliamentary seat after garnering 29,215 against his close competitor, Wambura Maranga who got 25,737 votes.
The green horn politician knocked out his competitors including incumbent MP Peter Weru, who only garnered a paltry 805 votes in the primary election held on Wednesday.
Rigathi was largely left in charge of Nyeri County after his brother was forced to seek constant medical care abroad before he succumbed to cancer at a London Hospital earlier this year. His family had planned to have him contest for Nyeri gubernatorial seat to succeed Wamathai who took over power after his brother died.
In late March however, Rigathi revealed that he had abandoned the Governor bid for the Mathira MP seat following wide consultations with family, friends and political advisors.
