Businesses Looted, Set Ablaze in Nairobi’s Kawangware Area
Several businesses and homes in Nairobi’s Kawangware were looted and set ablaze on Friday evening.
Area residents say three people were killed in the violence and dozens of others injured.
All shops at the junction of routes 46 and 56, including butcheries, hotels and salons were razed down, according to the Nation.
Waiyaki Way Supermarket was also set on fire by the rioters but Nairobi County firefighters managed to save it from destruction. "Had it not been for the fire engines, we would be talking of massive losses. The fire was huge but they have been able to manage it before spreading," a witness told the Nation.
The Friday evening violence is said to have been started when groups of youths supporting rival political parties confronted each other. The situation soon got out of hand and some of the youth started looting and burning buildings.
