Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has jetted out of the country for an official trip to Spain, days after returning to Kenya after a one-month trip to Estonia.
Joho flew to Spain on Wednesday to source for funds to set up water desalination plants in Mombasa County, his office said, adding that this is an effort towards realising his promise for provision of clean water to the residents of Mombasa.
The governor’s spokesperson Richard Chacha said Joho plans to build two desalination plants – one in Likoni and a second one at Shimo La Tewa. Chacha said the Likoni plant is expected to produce 30,000 cubic metres of water per day with the other producing 100,000 cubic metres.
“During his visit, the governor will meet Spanish government officials and water desalination experts,” the spokesman stated.
Spain became the first country in the world to successfully establish desalination technology that has been used for over 40 years. Joho will later travel to France.
“The Governor will then attend the Global Water Summit in France where he will deliver an address,” Chacha stated.
His previous trip to Estonia, which lasted for about a month, caused outrage among residents of the coastal county, who questioned how he was running the government while abroad for several weeks.
