Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has been summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters following demonstrations in her constituency during President William Ruto's visit to Kiambu County.
The summons, scheduled for Saturday, April 5, comes after protestors in Githunguri were heard chanting slogans critical of President Ruto on Friday evening. Authorities are reportedly scrutinizing Wamuchomba's alleged role in organizing the demonstrations, which coincided with President Ruto's development tour of the Mt. Kenya region.
While the DCI has not publicly stated the reason for the summons, it follows growing discontent within the central region, with some leaders openly distancing themselves from the President's initiatives. Wamuchomba, a known ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has confirmed the summons via social media, accusing the government of failing to deliver on its promises.
"The CCIO Kiambu has through a telephone called and sermoned me; because the great people of Githunguri refused to be lured by fake promises and projects that never materialised. Arrests you can do, but that will not change the facts! No more lies! You promised, deliver!" she wrote on X.
She criticizes the authorities and asserts that arrests would not change the facts. Before the protests, Wamuchomba had publicly voiced concerns regarding newly introduced coffee levies, arguing that they would burden coffee producers.
In an open letter to the President, dated March 30, she highlighted regulations gazetted on February 7, 2025, and demanded the revocation of the levies, citing inadequate consultation with farmers. Authorities allege that Wamuchomba's actions led to parallel meetings and demonstrations, escalating tensions during the President’s engagement in Kiambu.
Despite the summons, Wamuchomba maintains her position, asserting that unfulfilled government pledges will not sway the people of Githunguri.
