Security authorities have launched an operation to curtail operations of the dreaded criminal group Mungiki following its resurgence in the Central Kenya region.
Police say the outlawed organization has reestablished its activities in Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyandarua and Nyeri counties.
Central Regional Coordinator Wilson Njenga says that members of the illegal sect have been threatening residents and demanding levies from construction sites, traders and Public Service Vehicle operators.
“We must protect businesses, both small and large, as well as restore law and order in this region,” Njenga says.
Njenga says the group is mainly operating in fast growing shopping centres and bus termini, where they collect daily route fees from matatus and businesses.
“They are back in termini and in the growing areas where they demand money from investors. They are expelling workers from construction sites and demanding their share of wages. We won’t condone these acts and from next month we shall be speaking a different story,” Njenga vows.
He notes that several youth in the region have been recruited into the group through coercion and false promises.
A shoot-to-kill order by the later Security Minister John Michuki in 2002 saw several members of the infamous group killed.

Mungiki Returns??? Mungiki's always been there. They just transformed their appearance. I was there when they tore womens clothes in the streets for allegedly wearing "short dresses" and skirts. I was there when they would capture young men (whom they had no right to lay a finger on) and RUTHLESSLY Circumcised them against their will. I was there when they had they had weird and peculiar burial rituals (and then some quarters still maintain-"Sisi Central hatunanga uchawi"-) I was there living and thriving in Ainamoi Constituency before and after the dispu elections, when at first Kikuyus were being driven out of Kericho town (Nasty!) Then Kisiis because of the Kisii cop who shot and killed the MP allegedly womanizing and being in an illicit relationship with several women including his wife. I was there in the displaced persons' camp when Mungikis were put in Kenyan Military uniform and they brought the clashes especially in Kericho area and parts of Rift Valley to a halt. Some people say it's the peace talks but we who were there know what Really and Truly happened. Mungukis were Raw and vicious. They were in military uniform but never displayed an ounce of military discipline. They smoked weed recklessly and would sharpen knives and the way they would test how sharp it was, was to slice a part of their hand and lick the blood off of it. I was there when Mungiki would scare the shit out of the people who lived amongst them due to their terrorism and some abandoned their houses and slept on trees- this was in Kiambu and parts of Murang'a. I was there when Mungiki tried to vindicate themselves and sought to absolve themselves including from the unimaginable extortion especially on public service vehicles- I mean who never saw this while aboard any matatu around Nairobi and it's environs. I was also there when Mungiki members especially the dons were mercilessly executed by the same government they supported in broad daylight. I was also there when Mungiki ran to Raila for help. Never mind Raila was their one "Big enemy". Times have come and gone but some Mungikis were allegedly dispatched to the US and Europe to take-out AKA kill some witnesses of ICC or intimidate them against testifying. Some of it worked didn't it? Mungiki have spread out. Some of them are actually reading this post. Some of them now work in government and others in parastatals. Some have gone underground fronting big businesses. And so my dear friends if your perception of Mungiki is a dreadlocked, drugged out, stained toothed, dirty guy somewhere. You better rethink that. Mungiki has always been around. Na bado!
Mgeni You say that "Mungikis were put in Kenyan Military uniform ..........." but I think "The Kenya ARMY was used to put the Violence to a halt."
@Mgeni you should write a book and tell that story. Just shaking my head.
@mgeni well put!Real mungiki is peaceful wont ask for money on the streets,on matatu, construction sites or kill kiunjunga. This doing that should be shoot to kill hapo hapo?Police should do their job n do it carefully they shouldn't target young kikuyu men juu if they target innocent they will retariate mbaya sana.

Mr. Njenga, the word "Mungiki" comes from the word "Muingi" meaning the community. Let's be careful not to refer any band of criminals that emerges in that region as "Mungiki" unless there is proof or evidence that they are calling themselves by that name. This is an insult to the people of Central unless the criminal group you are referring to has told you they are called "Mungiki" or they have registered themselves as such. Do not attack the people of Central in the name of "Mungiki" because you will be attacking the community. Say there are criminal groups and errandicate their activities.
