Nairobi County Assembly to Debate Sonko Impeachment Motion Beginning March 3rd

Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has until 10 am Monday, March 2nd to file responses to allegations leveled against him in the motion for his impeachment.

This is according to a circular released by Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi on Tuesday.

Elachi said copies of Sonko’s reply will then be distributed to all MCAs before the house begins debating the ouster motion for three days beginning Tuesday, March 3rd.

Speaker Elachi divulged that 55 Ward Representatives had signed the impeachment motion but their identities have been concealed for their own safety and security.

“…the Chair is concerned that some of the members who appended their signatures have been threatened. The Chair takes these actions seriously and shall not shy away from invoking the applicable provisions of the County Assemblies Powers and Privileges Act, 2017 in protecting the Members,” said Elachi.

“…at the conclusion of the debate on the motion, and the Chair having been satisfied that all members intending to contribute have done so, a vote on the motion shall be taken and this shall be done on or before the third sitting day,” she added.

The motion was tabled before the assembly last Thursday by Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok, who is also the Minority Whip. His main grounds for Sonko’s removal are abuse of office, violation of the Constitution, and irregular procurement of tenders.

Last December, the court barred Sonko from accessing his office after he was charged with graft-related offenses over alleged misappropriation of county funds amounting to Sh357 million.

On Monday, Sonko handed over the functions of the Nairobi County government to the National government.
