Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has come to the rescue of Kenyans stuck in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Kabogo said he has received numerous distress calls from dozens of Kenyans who have been forced to sleep on empty stomachs in the streets of Dubai after losing their jobs.
Touched by their plight, Kabogo has pledged Sh500,000 to help the group secure flight tickets back home.
Speaking during an interview with Milele FM presenter Jalang’o on Friday, Kabogo accused the government of doing little to help Kenyans suffering in the diaspora during the Covid-19 crisis.
“It is painful to see Kenyans suffering abroad and the government should send one Dreamliner to bring them back home. They are jobless and have nowhere to turn to,” said Kabogo.
He added: “One of them texted me and told me that they had slept hungry for three days.”
Kabogo further appealed to Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Ministry to move with speed and assist Kenyans stranded abroad.
“I believe our ambassador can reach out to Dubai leaders and organize for Kenyans to be granted food and shelter,” Kabogo stated.
At the same time, he urged ODM leader Raila Odinga to intervene and push the government to act on the matter.
"Of late, Raila doesn't pick my calls. People will claim that I went to be sanitized if I go to see visit him at Capitol Hill, Nairobi offices. Why is he silent when Kenyans are suffering?”
“He has a voice that can be used to push the government to act. Who else can swear himself in as President in Kenya and not face the government's wrath?" posed Kabogo.
