Jubilee Party Clears Dennis Waweru and Agnes Kagure for Nairobi Governor's Seat

President Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party has cleared two candidates ahead of the upcoming Nairobi gubernatorial by-election.

The two, former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru and businesswoman Agnes Kagure, will face off in the primaries to decide who will be the ruling party’s flagbearer in the February 18th, 2021 by-election.

Jubilee secretary-general Raphael Tuju confirmed their names were submitted to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Monday.

"We have cleared two candidates, Agnes Kagure and Dennis Waweru, and submitted their names to the IEBC,” Tuju said.

Similarly, Raila Odinga-led ODM cleared two aspirants to fight for the party’s ticket. The two are ODM Women league president Ms. Beth Syengo and former Homa Bay gubernatorial contender Sam Wakiaga.

ODM National Elections Board (NEB) Chairperson Catherine Mumma told Daily Nation that the party will try to pick its flagbearer through consensus as opposed to nominations.

“We need to forward the names to the party to quickly decide whether we can get the candidates to agree between themselves on who should run," she said.

“That’s what we normally do so that they can have a consensus on who should go for it and if not, they are subjected to the primaries.”

The seat fell vacant following the impeachment of Mike Sonko earlier this month.
