An elderly man of Asian descent has narrated to a Nairobi court how a 33-year-old woman tried to rob him of millions of shillings.
Appearing before Milimani law court magistrate Rose Otieno, 70-year-old Alihadi Dafilla Ali said Mercy Njoki alias Fatuma forged his death certificate, a marriage certificate, and a birth certificate of an inexistent child in a well-planned scheme to rob him Sh120 million.
The businessman told the court that he received a call from Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) while in Kampala, Uganda, and was summoned to the lender’s branch along University Way in Nairobi. Alihadi said he traveled from Kampala to the Kenyan capital via road after missing a flight.
Upon arrival in Nairobi, he visited the bank where he met the branch manager and other two officials from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). Alihadi was shocked when the officials asked him whether he has passed away and a number of other questions.
“They asked me whether I was married and with a child. I stated that I was once married to Fatuma Abdulmoniem, a lady from Yemen, whom I divorced in 1983. She went back to her country and we had no child together,” he told the magistrate.
It is after this that he was informed that a woman had visited the bank claiming that he was dead and that she was his widow. She also claimed that they had a daughter together.
“I told Mr. Rotich, the bank staff, that I was not aware of the claims by the woman since I have never married anyone since 1983. I also told him that I have no child by the name Amina Zainab,” the businessman said.
Alihadi disowned a marriage certificate linking him to the suspect Fatuma Mercy Njoki and stated that he did not know anyone by that name.
“I was shown my death certificate and a birth certificate of Amina Zainab, my alleged daughter, and a land sale agreement. The documents are fake and were made with an intention of stealing money from my bank account,” he said.
In this case, Njoki and his co-accused Bakari Abdalla Vuwa were charged with conspiracy to defraud the businessman of Sh120 million. The two also face four other counts of forging a death certificate and a birth certificate.
Court documents show that Njoki presented to the bank a marriage certificate dated April 2nd, 2010, claiming it was issued in Imenti North, Meru county.
She also presented a birth certificate of a child aged seven years, her certificate of her conversion to Muslim, and a death certificate of Alihadi purporting that he died on January 17th, 2018, at Kenyatta National Hospital Nairobi.

Fat and stupid dangerous combination
Jamani! Uhalifu huu na pia utapeli huu utakoma lini?
Yeap, crimes that used to be a preserve of men are now almost getting dominated by women.
I dont know if these statistics have changed yet,but in USA 5 years ago women were being imprisoned at a higher rate that men.And most of their crimes involved larceny ,forgery, and drugs. My guess is that these crimes pretty much parallel/mirror, what statistics might find in Kenya, save for may be the rate of incarceration.
My take on women and these kind of crimes in society in that traditional roles that played vital part in lessening crime have been drastically eroded replaced by something approaching egalitarian way of life. The apple cart has been upset...We shall be forced to go through the growing pains of this new era of"equality". eventually ,water will find its level so the adage goes,as the two sexes fight to coexist in harmony.
Men are no longer the sole financial providers in homes.Women have tasted the finer things of life that used to be a preserve for men.And they love it.The Problem is that these finer things are not cheap. And depending on a man for them has become unreliable. So they are " forced to find ways of getting money. They look around and see how men do it(By hook,or by crook),and thus they learn by imitating...
If I can call it good news, by their very nature, women are not as dangerous as men when it comes to crime. I hope that does not change otherwise we would be in for a heck of a rough ride on earth. My two cents.
An article in Daily Nation today highlights sex tourism at the coast. Notably Mtapwa. By the way this in not anything new.
The article goes on to say how these old foreigners, old enough to be grand parents of these kenyan teens use them for sexual exploitation.
The kicker here is that, some parents encourage their your girls to engage is sexual activities with these foreigners.
You may ask what this got to do with the article on about Njoki, the scammer. Well in the daily nation article ,one of the mothers is also charged with sexual offense, and neglecting her daughter. She encouraged the daughter to get cash from these foreigners.Iam sure wazungus. These two women are driven by lust for money to commit crimes that were pretty much unheard of 50 years ago. That's the common denominator- greed for cash( some might argue-lack of cash),and getting it by any means necessary. What is going on with our morals are asociety?I am for change, and progress in society, but not for this destructive, and perversion brought here by foreigners, with full knowledge that in their home countries they would be dealt with very severely. So shamefull to take advantage of the poor in that way,and worse, when parents encourage prostitution of their children.
At least wait until he actually die ndio uibe style iyo.
There's still some inside job, how did she know he existed and wasn't married in the first place?
There are more people involved in this crime apart from Njoki and her co-accused to include government workers.
The woman is just a pawn in the whole scheme which possibly includes government workers, masterminds and look outs. Don’t forget the tycoon’s employees which make it also an inside job. The woman was chosen because the schemers figured she would be more persuasive and convincing to the bank employees.
Most KENYANS are devil's once you deal with them..
Hope comet wipe them
