Kenyan Teachers to Enjoy Extended Maternity and Paternity Leave

Kenyan teachers are set to enjoy extended maternity and paternity leave in new changes announced by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Female teachers have been granted an additional month of maternity leave following childbirth while their male counterparts will get an extra week of paternity leave.

This means female employees are now entitled to a maternity leave of four months and a three-week paternity leave for male teachers.

Previously, female teachers were being granted three-month leave following childbirth and only two weeks for their male colleagues.

TSC Chairperson Nancy Macharia says the changes are a result of a charter agreement for the years 2021-2025, and are aimed at improving the education sector.

Under the new agreement, a teacher who adopts a child will be given a 45-day leave, but they must submit their leave requests in advance to allow for the allocation of vacancies in their respective schools.
