10 Million Motorists Use the Nairobi Expressway in Six Months

Moja Expressway, the operator of the Nairobi Expressway, says at least 10 million motorists have used the toll highway since its launch in July last year.
Speaking during the 10,000,000th Million Milestone Celebration on Tuesday, Moja Expressway CEO Steve Zhao indicated that about 50,000 vehicles use the road in a day, representing a five-time jump from the trial operations in May last year.
“It gives me pride to admit that this journey has been successful because of the contributions from all who are gathered here today. As of 7th February 2023, the total number of vehicles that have used the Nairobi Expressway stands at 10 million,” said Zhao.
The expressway, the first major project in the country to be carried out through a Public-Private Partnership [PPP] model, was officially opened by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on July 31st, 2022.
The Sh88 billion road runs from Mlolongo through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Nairobi Central Business District to the Westlands area along Waiyaki Way.
The highway has 11 interchanges at Mlolongo, Standard Gauge Railway, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, Westlands, and James Gichuru Road.
Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) which is responsible for designing, financing, and building the highway, will maintain and operate the road for 27 years to recoup its investment through toll fees.
