Kisumu Hotel and Lodging Owners Put on Notice over Bedbug, Rat Infestation

The Kisumu County government has raised alarm over increased infestations of rats and bedbugs in the city's hotels, lodgings, and guest houses.

In a notice, Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga threatened to shut down and take legal action against the establishments if they fail to control the insects and rodents.

“The city department of Public Health conducted a rapid assessment and found that there is increase of mosquitoes, bed bugs and high infestation of rats and other insect vectors in most of the hotels, guest houses, lodging rooms and other dwelling areas within the city of Kisumu,” Wanga stated.

The owners of the premises have until Friday this week to put their house in order or risk legal action or possible closure.

Wanga said the premises were violating the Public Health Act Cap 242 and regulations by operating under insanitary conditions.

“Failure to comply with the requirements of this notice may lead to legal action instituted against you without any further communications,” the notice adds.

The owners of the properties are required to carry out fumigation or indoor residual spraying of their premises using appropriate and approved public health insecticide.

They are also to carry out de-ratting of rodents in these premises with appropriate and approved public health poisons. Lodges are required to eradicate bedbugs by improving rigor of their control.

Without naming the hotels, lodgings, and guest houses, you are putting all of them under one umbrella.Which is not fair.I have never used any of those facilities in Kisumu, but It would take alot to persuade me that a five * hotel in Kisumu fails to meeting public health standards. Sure Iam mindful that some proprietors cut corners, and try to get away with what they can to make hugh Profits, but I chance to say probably 10 % of greedy ones do that, which is still bad anyway.
However, one thing Iknow for sure, is that, if Iam a high profile individial carnoodling with my young side chick ,or someone's wife, at a bug infested motel,Iwould not raise the alarm...I Would graciously count my blessings,if the scandal in kept under the lid...Nontheless, the problem needs to be addressed for health concerns.Well, I guess I shall to wait for "clearence"before I book a hotel in Kisumu-Mmmmm with my 20 year old massage therapist moonlighting as...a godess of heavenly bliss.

What’s wrong with Jaluos? Those establishments should have shut down until each and every rat, bedbug and cockroach is eliminated!! FILTHY

@Juju these are individual hoteliers not all Luos. It’s advisable to ask WaMugunda for alternative sites of COD business. He and his 67 year old girlfriend know the best bushes/forests in Kenya.

Hey MWAKILISHI, this forum is quickly losing its glory, and exclusive status it enjoyed yester in years as the best source of diaspora news... Compared to 5years ago, viewership and commentators have reduced in number.Remember the days when you could get more than 5000,views on regular basic?
This horrible decline is due to some characters that have infiltated this forum for the purpose of merely insulting other readers. It may be freedom of speech, but it is costing you viewership...
These characters that are eroding this forum, from what I have noticed, and also been on the receiving end ,is that they lack civility and basic etiquette. Some come across as arrogant rude, and filled with disdain for others.
This forum would be so much better if "participants" conducted themselves with decorum. And most do.Yes this forum would be really great and attractive if you could only allow discourses that are civil ,respectful, and carried along by people of open minds.People who stick to the topic, and respond to concerns of others with respect and interllectual honesty. surely we can have great intercourse of ideas without insulting each other. Some call it agree to disagree respectifully. However if this is the format you chose to employ for whatever reason, more power to you.But sometimes it pays to listen to the "customers/clients" however small or powerless they may appear. And of course some are ready to rebuke me and hawl comments like," if you dont like this forum, dont come on it",and they are right. What say you Mwakilishians?
