Uhuru Convenes a Special National Delegates Conference for Jubilee Party Amid Wrangles

The Jubilee Party is set to hold a special National Delegates Conference on May 22nd amid the ongoing wrangles within the political outfit.

Through a notice on Saturday, Jubilee party leader Uhuru Kenyatta said the agenda of the conference is to review, formulate and approve party policies; receive a status report from the National Executive Committee and consider and approve any other matters.

In the notice posted on the party's Twitter handle, Uhuru indicated the conference will be held at the Bomas of Kenya.

On Wednesday, the former ruling party was ordered to vacate its offices in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, after factions from East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega and former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni clashed.

Police were forced to lob teargas outside the party’s officers to disperse the warring groups.

Kioni and Kega are fighting for control of the former ruling party, with the former refusing to step down as the Secretary-General to make way for the latter.

On February 9th, Jubilee Party's National Executive Council made changes to the outfit’s leadership, replacing Kioni with Kega.

The Registrar of Political Parties approved the changes but the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal overturned them.

Following the chaos, Uhuru made an impromptu visit to the party’s headquarters and urged those seeking to leave the party to exit in a peaceful manner.

“Those who want to leave Jubilee Party should do so in peach. We do not have a fight with anyone, we are protecting our party,” the former president said.

Kenyatta, who left office last September, also appeared to castigate the government over the violation of people’s rights and urged police to avoid being used to settle political scores.

“The police have other work to do and should not come here (Jubilee headquarters) to try to disturb officials and steal their party. Everyone has their rights,” he added.
