A Look at Ruto's Wealthy Network

Former National Treasury Henry Rotich has now taken on a new role as President William Ruto's special advisor.

This shift in position has led to questions about Rotich's level of influence within the administration, considering his previous responsibilities overseeing large sums of money. Rotich's appointment as a senior advisor on Fiscal Affairs Budget Policy in the Office of the President may appear as a step down from his previous role. However, insiders believe that his proximity to President Ruto could grant him significant influence, similar to that of his predecessor Prof Njuguna Ndung’u. Despite rumours suggesting that Rotich declined the appointment, he has stated his readiness to serve.

His inclusion in a group of influential economic advisors at the State House indicates a collaborative effort in shaping Kenya's economic policies. This team, which includes individuals like Adan Mohamed and Augustine Cheruiyot, holds considerable sway over policy-making and has direct access to President Ruto. Dr. David Ndii, another advisor, stands out for his outspokenness and willingness to challenge government decisions and engage in public discourse. Despite facing opposition from certain officials, Ndii's confidence reflects his positive relationship with President Ruto who values diverse perspectives in the formulation of policies.

Kenya's past regimes including President Mwai Kibaki achieved economic success. To continue this progress, the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA) has been formed with Ndii as the chairperson. Their main focus is on empowering the economy from the bottom up. The CEA has proposed key initiatives like the Housing levy and G-2-G fuel import scheme to address economic pressures and promote growth. However, there are doubts about the effectiveness of these measures, as currency stabilization remains a persistent challenge.

Critics are concerned about the increasing number of advisory positions and whether they align with the constitution. Transparency and accountability issues arise, particularly regarding the allocation of funds for advisors' expenses and the potential for favouritism. Rotich's exoneration from previous corruption allegations complicates his appointment, prompting civil society groups to urge caution in evaluating his suitability for public office. Despite being cleared legally, doubts still linger, reflecting a broader scepticism towards government appointments.

While advisors play a crucial role in shaping policy, the ultimate responsibility lies with President Ruto. As his administration deals with economic challenges and societal expectations, the influence of advisors like Rotich and Ndii will be closely examined.

Wana UDA mko wapi?
