The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has reversed its decision to suspend four religious leaders from ministering in their pulpits.
This reversal comes in the wake of significant online controversy and public outcry following the initial suspensions. The suspension affected five prominent figures within the SDA community: Pastor Elizabeth Mokoro, Kenneth Maina, Evangelist Shaban Ndege, Evangelist Millicent Odhiambo, and Evangelist Lantena. On July 4, the SDA Kenya Coast Field issued a notice prohibiting these individuals from ministering in their branches. The directive, signed by executive secretary Pastor Eliab Ombuoro instructed church members not to provide these leaders with any opportunities to serve, both within and outside the SDA Kenya Coast Field territory.
The ban was reportedly in line with a decision by the East Kenya Union Conference (EKUC), referencing action number 24EXCOM-055. However, the specific reasons for the suspension were not disclosed. The announcement of the ban triggered widespread outrage among church members and the general public. Social media platforms were inundated with discussions and debates, with many demanding transparency from church leadership regarding the rationale behind the suspensions. In response to the uproar, Pastor Eliab Ombuoro issued a letter on July 10, 2024, officially withdrawing the suspension directive.
“In reference to our letter dated 4th July 2024 on the above subject matter quoted (ACTION 24EXCOM-055), we wish to state that the letter is hereby withdrawn until advised otherwise. For those who might have read the letter, we request that you disregard it," reads the letter.
The letter urged recipients to disregard the previous communication. While the church did not provide explicit reasons for the reversal, it acknowledged the public outcry and decided to reconsider its stance. Some argue that religious organizations should engage in more open dialogue with their congregations, particularly when making decisions that significantly impact the community. Others emphasize the need for accountability and fairness in handling disciplinary matters. The church has confirmed that the reinstated religious leaders can now resume their ministerial duties.
