Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya has issued a decisive ultimatum to Raila Odinga, demanding clarification on his position within the political landscape.
Addressing journalists today, Munya emphasized the impossibility of simultaneously occupying both government and opposition positions. He announced an upcoming party meeting scheduled for the following Thursday, where PNU will reassess its relationship with the Azimio coalition. Munya points out that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party has already aligned itself with the government, necessitating a clear separation for those wishing to remain in opposition.
"Next Thursday, there will be a party meeting where we will decide our stance regarding our relationship with the Azimio coalition. The ODM Party has joined the government,” said Munya.
While expressing respect for Azimio partners who have accepted cabinet positions in President William Ruto's government, Munya reaffirms PNU's readiness to serve effectively in opposition. He stresses the importance of maintaining a distinct opposition voice to advocate for citizens' rights and hold the government accountable. Munya's ultimatum comes in the wake of Martha Karua's departure from the Azimio coalition. The Azimio co-principal cited the coalition's perceived collaboration with the government as her reason for leaving. This development has further intensified the internal conflict within the coalition.
“They cannot be in government and still remain in opposition. Those of us who wish to remain in opposition must separate ourselves to continue advocating for the rights of citizens," Munya stated.
The PNU leader also took the opportunity to address speculation about his personal ambitions. He categorically denied any interest in government positions, asserting that he could be more effective working directly with Kenyan citizens to bring about change, rather than within a government facing numerous challenges.
