Political Heavyweights Laud Millie Odhiambo at Book Launch Event

The launch of the book authored by Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo urges the current elected women MPs to reignite the spirit of the trailblazers from the past.

Held at Nairobi's Argyle Grand Hotel, the event drew a diverse audience of political figures, supporters, and advocates for gender equality in governance. Opposition leader Raila Odinga's foreword sets the tone for the book, characterizing it as a clarion call for innovative approaches to create equitable opportunities for all Kenyans. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation supported the publication and launch event in a bid to stress the importance of such works in advancing democratic principles and gender parity. Martha Karua, Raila's running mate in the 2022 presidential election, was a prominent figure at the launch.

Her presence, along with that of other influential women in Kenyan politics, highlighted the progress made in female political representation while also serving as a reminder of the challenges that persist. Odhiambo, who currently serves as the Minority Whip in the National Assembly, has carved out a remarkable legacy as the longest-serving woman MP. Her journey from a nominated position to an elected one mirrors that of other successful female politicians, such as Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda, who shared her own experiences at the event. Former MP Rachel Shebesh used the platform to challenge current women legislators, urging them to emulate the passion and determination of trailblazers like Karua, Charity Ngilu, and the late Wangari Maathai.

Karua's advice to aspiring women leaders was particularly poignant, stressing the importance of standing out and making a significant impact rather than merely conforming to expectations. This sentiment was echoed by FNF Country Director Steffan Schott, who praised Odhiambo's book as an inspirational guide for future women leaders. Cabinet Secretaries Aden Duale and Opiyo Wandayi commended Odhiambo's legislative accomplishments, highlighting her prolific contributions to parliamentary debates and her role in shaping national policies. The event also saw the participation of Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who lauded Odhiambo's mentorship of young women in politics.

Odhiambo's dedication of the book to her parents, particularly her mother, Damaris Auma Odhiambo, added a personal touch to the proceedings. The launch of "Rig or be Rigged?" transcended a mere book presentation, evolving into a rallying cry for increased female participation and excellence in Kenyan politics. It served as a platform to discuss the ongoing challenges faced by women in politics and the need for continued advocacy and support. Odhiambo's book offers a unique perspective on Kenyan politics, blending personal experiences with insights into electoral processes and the pursuit of justice and representation.
